Meet the 2012 HERlead Fellows


I am a junior in high school, and active in a teen grant-giving foundation called “Voices.”  I was born in Northbrook, IL. I am extremely passionate about music, sports, and acting for social justice. 



I’m from New York. I am actively involved in the academic and extracurricular life of my school, where I study in the advanced studio art program. I love to try new things and meet new people.


A native New Yorker, I am currently a senior at the Berkeley Carroll School and am involved in many extracurriculars. Some of my favorite activities include: United Nations group, musical theater, cooking, swimming, traveling, mentoring younger students, and studying foreign languages.


I live California in a town located in the heart of wine country called Santa Rosa. I am a senior in high school. My extracurricular activities include soccer, track, piano, and a non-profit that I started called Threads for Teens.



I’m from Bethesda. I enjoy making pottery, playing field hockey, and reading. I have also been involved in Girl Scouts for almost 10 years. I am very passionate about the sciences, especially Biology.


I am representing Montgomery Blair High, where I am involved in many extracurriculars. I strive to be responsible and reliable in all my duties, and am very interested in providing services to those in need. 


I live in New York City and love the city life. I'm in the eleventh grade and love to sing, read, and draw. I'm very passionate about helping others, and at school I am a member of a diversity group called POC.


I'm a junior at Holy Names Academy in Seattle. I play lacrosse and swim for my school and I'm passionate about service and social justice. 



I am from Guilderland, New York. I love to travel and spend time with friends. I am passionate about engaging youth in community service. 


I am a junior at Milken Community High School in Los Angeles. I am passionate about the Jewish World Watch, which combats genocide in Darfur and Congo, and I am also a coach for the Special Olympics. 


I'm a senior from Torrance, CA. I am fortunate to have been able to travel extensively, and have developed a well-rounded world perspective.

I am from Pasadena, CA and a senior at the Thatcher School. I am involved in many fundraising projects for my school, and am currently planning a benefit concert on behalf of the Playing for Change Foundation.

I’m from Baltimore. I play golf, squash, and field hockey and am passionate about music and art.

I live in a small town nestled below the Rocky Mountains in Colorado called Montrose. I am passionate about working with people, especially kids, and I love playing volleyball.

I was born in Kansas City and I grew up in Shanghai, where I attended two international schools. I'm very passionate about social justice and I'm involved in multiple social justice organizations in my school and community.

I'm a junior in high school from Tampa. I'm currently a teen advisor for Girl Up, and my passions include women's issues, human rights, and solving poverty, especially in emergent countries.

I am from Louisville, KY, where I am currently a junior at Sacred Heart Academy. I am very passionate about cooking and using my passion to improve the eating habits and food opportunities of impoverished children. 


I am a senior at C. Milton Wright High School in Bel Air. I love to sing opera, participate in political activism, and campaign for LGBT rights. My favorite animal is a mountain goat, and in my free time, I like to play the banjo.



I am a freshman in college, interested in studying communications or sociology. I love sports; I run and play lay field hockey, squash and lacrosse. I also love art/design and was the head of my high school art club.


I am a senior at Lawton Chiles High School in Tallahassee. I currently serve as the Chairperson of the Florida Youth Commission, a youth advisory body to the state of Florida. I am also a founding member of the Florida Coalition against Domestic Violence’s Youth Advisory Board. 



I am from Streamwood, Illinois. My work in public service has granted me the duty of equipping young students with the resources needed to succeed. I am devoted towards pursuing a career in Public Policy and Economics. 


I have lived in Houston all my life and attend a charter school called KIPP, Knowledge Is Power Program. I am involved in UNICEF, an organization helping children in third world countries. It is my passion to give help to those who have not had the same opportunities I have had. 


I moved to Norway this year to finish high school through the United World College Program. I'm extremely passionate about fostering intercultural understanding and studying politics and international relations.


I love to read and write and to meet people. I am observant and that leads to a quiet, seemingly shy demeanor, but I am not as timid as I seem. I am fortunate to go to a school that allows growing students to speak, create and breathe in a supportive atmosphere.


I was born in Decatur, Georgia, and I'm currently a senior in high school. I'm a member of the National Honor Society and I'm passionate about mathematics and music.



I am passionate about activism and volunteering. I also I play the flute and sax, travel as much as I can, take pictures, and am involved in Girl Scouts.


I am a senior at St. Luke's School in New Canaan, CT. At school I am involved in varsity soccer, squash, and lacrosse. I also participate in the Free the Children club, which raises money to help children both internationally and domestically.


I'm from Plymouth, Michigan. I'm a senior in high school and dance is a big part of my life. I'm very passionate about saving rainforests and have spent the past 5 years of my life educating consumers about the unsustainable palm oil production in Girl Scout Cookies. 


I am from Kabul, Afghanistan and I am currently a senior at St. Timothy's High School. I am passionate about serving people who need help, and I want to work to empower women in Afghanistan and globally. 


I am a senior from Covington, Louisiana. In 2007, I formed a non-profit called Kids Wanna Help®, which organizes workshops for kids in order to improve their self-esteem and to teach them skills necessary for entrepreneurial success.  


I am a senior from Mendota Heights, Minnesota. I enjoy filmmaking as a means of personal expression as well as a way to authentically represent the voices of those in my community.


My name is Monica, and I am a senior from Boulder, CO. I am an avid martial artist, a participant in Speech and Debate, and an officer in service organizations such as the National Honors Society and the Spanish Honors Society. 



I'm from Glen Rock, NJ and attend the Academy of Holy Angels. I enjoy archery, reading (especially fantasy), and learning about Iceland. I am involved in my school's chapter of Equality Now and the Book Club, and I've been a volunteer in my town library since sixth grade.


I’m from Atlanta and am in the 12th grade at Grady High School. I love traveling, learning about other cultures, and languages. I am a co-founder of the Grady Activism Club at my school, which provides a base for students to address specific local and global issues.


I'm a senior from Brookfield, Wisconsin. I've always felt strongly about the power of language to promote understanding and equality within our communities.


I am a senior at the University High School in Carmel, Indiana, where I'm active in the Green Club, Chemistry Club, and Community Services Club I also enjoy medical research and spending time volunteering at local organizations. 


I'm a junior at Northside College Prep in Chicago. I am on the board for ProjectArc, a student-led non-profit organization that is committed to helping the less fortunate. I am also the founder of the Amal Foundation, a non-profit committed to helping women and children in underdeveloped countries. 


I am a senior at National Cathedral School in Washington, DC and have been a class president, a service board representative, a student ambassador, and a peer group leader. I have journeyed to Cambodia for the past two years to work at the Home of Grace Orphanage in a village outside of Phnom Penh. 


I am a senior at Midlothian High School in Virginia. I am passionate about the power of performances and teaching young children in my area about how performing arts can enhance their daily lives. 


I’m from Denver, where I am currently a junior at Denver Academy of Torah High School. I love math and hope to pursue a career in architecture, and in my free time I also enjoy zumba, boxing, and babysitting. 


I was born in Liverpool, England, but currently live in Hockessin, Delaware. I'm passionate about promoting girls’ self-esteem and finding a cure for cancer. I also enjoy running, singing, and reading.


I’m in eleventh grade at the Bronx School for Law, Government and Justice in New York. The most prominent volunteer work I have completed was as a teacher assistant to my 7th grade English teacher and as a track coach, both of which have inspired my passion for helping others. 


I was born and raised in St. Louis, where I am a senior in high school. I am a member of my school’s debate team, and am also a co-founder of the St. Louis Urban Debate League. I am a passionate young political activist and enjoy rallying for causes I believe in. 


I am a junior from the suburbs outside of Chicago. I am very involved in an organization called “Friendship Circle,” which allows me to meet with an 11 year-old girl with Down's syndrome on a weekly basis. 


I'm a senior at Chagrin Falls High School in Ohio. I'm very involved in the Geauga County 4-H program and I love anything related to 4-H, community service, and working for others.


I am a junior at McClatchy High School in Sacramento. Most of my passions lie in improving international communities, such as providing better access to educational facilities, safety programs, and healthy food. 


I am a senior from Chapel Hill, NC. I love to play the flute at community concerts. My passion is to become an educator and further the opportunities of women and girls worldwide. 



I am a home-schooled high school junior from Queens, NY. My passions include alternative medicine and performing my original spoken word pieces to encourage literacy and shed light on various social issues.
